The University of Derby formerly Derby College of Art and Technology or simply Derby College is a public university in the city of Derby, England. It traces its history back to the establishment of the Derby Diocesan Institution for the Training of Schoolmistresses in 1851 and gained university status in 1992 as one of the new universities.

The university provides over 300 study programmes at undergraduate level. Undergraduate programmes as well as short courses, foundation degrees and postgraduate degrees cover most academic disciplines and sub-disciplines.

Currently the university is home to around 34,000 students in all areas of study.

A warm welcome

Welcome to the University of Derby. We’re an ambitious, modern university with two campuses in Derbyshire, central England. We’re also a much-loved second home to more than 1,700 international students from 100 countries studying at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Excellent teaching that really prepares you for a successful, fulfilling career: this is what we focus on. Our courses will develop your academic knowledge, practical experience and employability skills such as communication and leadership.

If you need support – either with your course or with life as an international student – we’ll make sure you get it. We came out on top in the International Student Barometer (ISB) 2018 rankings among the UK Modern Universities group for the formal welcome given to students arriving at the University from overseas, and first among the UK Modern Universities group for multi-cultural learning and faith support.

The Purple Flag awarded city of Derby is a welcoming and safe place with lots going on for international students to really experience British culture.

Studying as an international student

In this clip from our recent Open Day Live, our international students and staff are asked about what it’s like to move to the UK to study.

The full campus experience

From September 2021, we are thrilled that we will be able to welcome all our students back to campus. Most of our teaching will be face to face, with plenty of interactive and applied learning. Large teaching sessions will continue to be delivered online and students will have access to a range of expertly designed digital resources.

All of our facilities will be open, including our specialist study spaces, the gym, libraries, social learning spaces, and food outlets. And our support services will be on campus to offer help if needed.

The safety of our students and staff is our number-one priority. So, if government guidance changes and restrictions are needed, we are well prepared to respond quickly.

When to apply

Applications open from the end of October but most new students apply from January. New students with an UNCONDITIONAL FIRM (UF) or CONDITIONAL FIRM (CF) offer from Derby can usually apply for halls 48 hours after they have accepted their offer from the Admissions Department.

You'll have the chance to tell us your room preferences when you apply and though we can't guarantee that you'll be offered your first choice of room, we will, however, do our best to meet your requirements from the choices you've made. The sooner you apply, the greater the chance that you'll get your first room preference. You should also tell us whether you want to live in a single or mixed gender flat and if you have any particular requirements because of a medical condition.

How to apply

All applications should be made online. Currently, we advise you to apply online using any browser except Google Chrome 9.0 as some customers are experiencing difficulties with it.

What happens after you've applied?

When we've allocated you a room, we'll email you to let you know and we'll send you an offer of accommodation, so remember to check your emails regularly. To accept our Offer of Accommodation, you'll need to complete the online offer and accept it within ten working days.

Our guarantee

This year we will guarantee every first year and overseas student a room in halls if applications are completed by 10 August.
